Competition Team: 2018/19 Season

Description

For those who strive to advance within the dance world, have a competitive spirit and enjoy valuable feedback from professional and experienced industry masters, GDSC’s Competition Team is the perfect fit. Team members will not only train at local workshops, but will also perform at two required competitions to bring home judges critiques and awards. This year, we have chosen StarQuest and Revolution Talent Competition.

For 2018/19, GDSC is currently looking into future competitions and training opportunities. Stay tuned for detailed information on potential Portland competitions, as well as workshops. (For financial assistance, fundraising options will be available starting the beginning of each dance season.)

This group currently contains five disciplines: jazzhip hoplyrical/contemporarymusical theater and tap. There are three levels in jazz; two levels in hip hop (i.e., Competition Mini CREW and Competition Junior CREW); two levels in lyrical/contemporary (i.e., 1; 2 & 3); two levels in musical theater (i.e., 1 & 2; 3 & 4); and two levels in tap (i.e., 1; 2 & 3). Company members do not need to be in all disciplines in order to be a part of the group.

Current Requirements (Stay tuned for 2018/19 Info.)

Class requirements depend on what level and discipline a student is in (2017/2018 Fall/Spring Class Requirements). Other requirements will include two training weeks in the summer. Mark your calendars for August 14-18 and August 28-31 (2017 Summer Class Requirements). It is important that all students who are invited onto the team attend these two mandatory weeks to advance technically (first week) and learn ALL choreography for each discipline (second week). Because we are learning all choreography that last week of August, competition classes will be reduced to 30 minutes during both Fall and Spring sessions of 2017/2018. Rather than learn choreography throughout the year, class time will be used to establish formations and polish numbers. A reduction in time for competition classes only (NOT required tech classes), will not only help in scheduling for those students in multiple disciplines, but will also allow time on the schedule for our newest program, GDSC’s Performance Company.

To supplement convention training (as GDSC will not be requiring conventions this upcoming dance year due to the cost), we will be hosting various master class workshops at the studio throughout the dance year (2017/2018 Workshop Requirements). Currently, mark your calendars for a mandatory workshop taking place November 11. The Bend Dance Workshop is a fabulous opportunity for dancers to learn from high-profile masters within the dance industry. We are so excited to invite New York Broadway Dance Center instructors J.T. Horenstein and Tony Guerrero! We are also thrilled to be partnering with CLI Studios, a technology-based company that makes it possible for studios across the globe to train with high-profile master dancers virtually!

Students who are part of GDSC’s Competition Team will need to sign a contract that is non-negotiable. This contract includes information on dates, fees, as well as class, workshop and event requirements. ***Each Competition Team and Performance Company discipline will learn the same choreography for each level. (Choreography between programs will only vary in formations and dance length.) This is to accommodate students who would like to participate in both programs, as costuming fees can add up. In this way, we are keeping to one costume per level of each discipline within both programs. In addition to costuming, Competition and Performance students will need to purchase a team jacket. The 2018/19 Audition Process: Current Competition/Performance Students

Beginning April, all current Competition/Performance students who would like to audition for either group will be given time in their tech classes (jazz, tap and hip hop) to choreograph their own solos (i.e., April 2-13;). (To be accepted into one or both programs, students must attend their required tech classes.) The exception is Int./Adv. Acro, which will hold traditional auditions in class (date TBD). Int./Adv. Jazz Technique students will need to choreograph two numbers if they would like to be placed in both jazz and lyrical/contemporary groups. Students who would like to audition for musical theater will choreograph their solo in Competition Musical Theater. Staff will provide a song and documents that lay out criteria (i.e., set of important skills, length of piece, etc.) to include in solos. On these documents, students will indicate whether or not they’re auditioning for the competition team, performance company or both. All students are more than welcome to choreograph and practice their solos at home.

Students who are enrolled in the auditioning tech class but do not want to audition will be included in the audition process, as GDSC considers this workshop-style curriculum a great learning tool for all and an in-class project that would’ve been executed regardless of auditions.

From April 16-27, current students will audition their solos to be instructor-, peer- and self-assessed. The current technique class instructor will be the principle assessor.

As mentioned above, we will have three forms of assessment: anonymous peer-assessment; self-assessment; and instructor-assessment. We want all students to take ownership of their dancing and placements. Staff believes that providing constructive feedback for oneself, as well as peers, opens the door to critical thinking, which is so important for personal growth and advancement.

New students who would like to audition will be invited to an appropriate technique class between May 1 and May 5 (this also includes current company/competition students who are not a part of certain disciplines within the current competition program). New students will be evaluated based off of their performance in the technique class they were invited to. Check out the schedule below and call/email us for an appropriate class to attend.

What is the GDSC YouTube Comedy Show? 2018-03-13T17:50:55+00:00

The GDSC YouTube Comedy Show will be for our 2018/19 Competition Team and Performance Company members only.

No auditions needed! Sign-ups will be cast based off of character/script interest, as well as the director’s vision.

What is The Circus Production? 2018-03-12T02:37:04+00:00

GDSC will be doing a production number inspired by The Greatest Showman next year as a fun optional opportunity for our Competition Team and Performance Company members.

Auditions will be solo-based. Sign up for roles (lead & ensemble) on the door of studio A and please make sure to record the character you are auditioning for, your name and your age on the sign-up sheet. Deadline to sign up is March 22.

Auditions will take place Sunday, April 8. Detailed audition times will be sent out based on roles as the date gets closer.
