Audition Process
Throughout the month of April, all interested students (current and incoming) will audition in GDSC’s technique classes (hip hop, jazz and/or tap). Students interested in hip hop are required to participate in a hip hop technique class for the month of April. Students interested in contemporary, jazz, lyrical and/or musical theater are required to participate in a jazz technique class for the month of April. Students interested in tap are required to participate in a tap technique class for the month of April. Please scroll to the bottom of this web page to see our technique class schedule.
As we only have time to address a jazz combination Week Three (see process below), the disciplines of contemporary, lyrical and musical theater will be auditioned in order and free of charge on Saturday, April 20, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Please note: GDSC’s jazz technique portion of the audition process is still required, as it does address complementary aspects of the aforementioned disciplines.
Students (current and incoming) unable to make any portion of the audition process, please see our absence procedure below.
The audition process will be as follows:
Week One (Practice): Staff will provide all students with documents that lay out important criteria to practice, i.e., technical elements that have been addressed throughout the year. Students will spend their time practicing this list in preparation for Week Two.
Week Two (Audition): Staff will orchestrate across-the-floor combinations that encompass practiced skills from the week previous and judge those skills accordingly.
Week Three (Practice): Students will learn and practice a staff-choreographed combination.
Week Four (Audition): The combination from Week Three will be auditioned to be instructor-, peer- and self-assessed. The current technique class instructor will be the principle assessor.
Students who are enrolled in the auditioning tech class but not interested in auditioning will be included in the audition process, as GDSC considers this workshop-style curriculum a great learning tool for all.
As mentioned above, we will have three forms of assessment: anonymous peer-assessment; self-assessment; and instructor-assessment. We want all students to take ownership of their dancing and placements. Staff believes that providing constructive feedback for oneself, as well as peers, opens the door to critical thinking, which is so important for personal growth and advancement.
Audition Absences
All students (incoming and current) who are absent for any part of the audition process throughout the month of April will need to schedule a private audition at $1/minute, 60 minutes maximum. Attendance is highly suggested to avoid this fee.
